DANCE CLASSES

Egyptian dance is close to other middle-eastern disciplines like martial arts or yoga (roots, power of the pelvis area, notion of center of gravity). The specific technic of this dance (isolation of each part of the body and unity at the same time, contrast of fluidity and accentuation of movements) needs a deep practice of the body. The body is erect, flexible and well positioned. Classes start with a 30 minutes warm up, essential to open up, stretch and reinforce the abdomen. This is essential to the control of the body.

Three different styles are taught in this class: Shaabi (rural traditional), Baladi (urban popular) and Sharqi (classic). (from tradition to modernity)

Far from clichés of belly dancing and other sequins, we look for the authenticity and the respect of traditions. This class is for students who want to extend the body possibilities, in search of interiority essential to appreciate the real nature of this dance. This class opens the door to improvisation and interpretation of the oriental music (closely linked to the dance), allowing each student to express her own feelings.

A TYPICAL CLASS

After warm up and stretching exercises, the students start walking in order to feel their stability, essential to the powerful and flexible body movements.

On a slow or joyful music, the walk evolves into a variation of movements.
Steps are taught while standing or moving.

Anne Benveniste plays saggats (fingers’ cymbals): this helps students focus on the music and makes the hips movements strong and precise. The technique is taught step by step: interruptions, return of the music and rhythmic sequences.

In advanced classes, students discover the Baladi or Sharqi veil (see link) which opens the movement.

Dance practice goes with the discovery of music and of the musical culture. With very few supervision, the student lets herself go in the present moment and spontaneously responds to the music.

WARM UP AND STRETCHING EXCERCISES

Anne Benveniste invented an original method of body work for advanced students who practice a physical activity on a regular basis as well as to those who want to feel more comfortable in their own body. This preparation is taught either as a class by itself or as a way to begin a class.

It makes students more aware of the power of their pelvis and of the effect on the back. The class has different phases: developing the points of the back touching the floor, reinforcing the abdomen, deep stretching, ability to turn, stretch or get up easily with little or no effort at all. Accent is put on the beginning of the movement and its continuity.

On a very pleasant music, the body breathes better and appreciates the relaxation brought by the slowness of movement.

IN A WARM UP AND STRETCHING CLASS

Lying on a matt, we take the time to relax with breathing exercises, letting each part of our body wake up. Pushing against the floor at the lower, mid and upper parts of the back, we move the joints of the neck, arms and legs slowly to ease the tensions.

With the help of a rubber band, we stretch the hips, the gluteal muscles and the legs each person knows her own limits. Top of the back and arms are stretch against the wall or against a wall helm.

We go gently from one movement to the next; we strengthen the center of the body with appropriate exercises.

Then we get up gently, with a series of choreographed movements. Now the body is ready to move, powerful, flexible, carried by the rhythm.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THE CLASS

« Anne's technique is very unique and more profound than other classes I have tried. Her interpretation of the dance feels like it comes from deep within the soul and the vast knowledge she has to share is truly inspirational. Even though I always have something to learn when I go to her classes, I feel it's effortless and awakens the natural joy and sensuality the dance has to offer. »
